Warning: Starbread Bakery's senorita bread may be addicting
Senorita bread is often called Spanish bread in the Philippines. They are small, oblong rolls made of enriched bread dough slathered with butter, sugar and breadcrumbs. The dough is rolled up, sprinkled with more sugared breadcrumbs and baked. The finished bread has a base of buttery caramel that is hard to forget.
Starbread Bakery is a family owned chain that started in Vallejo. Nine stores are scattered between South San Francisco and Natomas, and Vacaville. Romy Maranan and Nelly Maranan opened the first shop in the 1990s under the name Quinley’s Filipino Bakery. A few years ago, they changed the name to Starbread Bakery. Family members have opened the different shops, including one on Mack Road in south Sacramento.
In January 2014, Vincent Tiuseco, the nephew of Nelly Maranan, and his fiancée Katelyn Kline, opened the Natomas shop. “Business is going well, we’re really fortunate,” says Kline. The senorita rolls are the main attraction for customers during the week, and she points out that they are constantly baking racks and racks of them.
They recently opened their latest branch in Anaheim, California last May 1, 2020.
