In the 5th lesson in this series we took a look at the ventricular arrhythmias for our ECG and EKG rhythm interpretation.
These ventricular arrhythmias are very important to recognize as often times these are either lethal or potentially lethal arrhythmias that your patients can be in and it is of utmost importance that you be able to identify these rhythms and do so quickly, as immediate intervention is often needed.
We start out with the basics and talk about idioventricular and accelerated idioventricular rhythms. These arrhythmias are the result of no signal reaching the bundle of His and to the Purkinje fibers. As a result the ventricular intrinsic rate must take over. Unfortunately these rhythms often to do provide sufficient cardiac output.
From there we move in to talk about the progression of these arrhythmias in to ventricular tachycardia. We talk about how your patient can be in a "stable" VTACH as well as an unstable lethal version, as well as some of the key characteristics to identify this rhythm. We also show an example of a polymorphic vtach (Torsades de Pointes) and explain what makes this different.
Finally we move on to cover how to identify ventricular fibrillation on ecg. We cover the two types, coarse and fine, but stress the importance that these are ALWAYS lethal arrhythmias and require immediate intervention to save your patients life.
Our hope is that by the end of this lesson you have a much better sense of the difference between these rhythms and more importantly that you can identify these quickly as often times your patients lives will depend on it!
