Paul McCartney at his best!
I really like the maingroove of this song! Listen for instance at bars 17-20. In bar 17 Paul plays all the notes staccato (short). In bar 18 he plays most of the notes legato (long) and he uses the rests in bars 18, 19 and 20 very musical. The ‘secret’ here is to play the note on the third beat of bar 18 (note = G) really as an eight note and to not sound it longer (as a quarter note). And also the first note in bar 19 (note = F) must really be played as an eight note and not as a quarter note. Also mind the rests on the fourth beat in bar 19 and the second note in bar 20.
I simply adore the slides he uses in the second Bridge. When he slides the note C of bar 100 towards the E note in bar 101 he doesn’t hit the E note, but just slides just towards it. He does the same in bar 104, and also in bar 106 he lets the F note slide while he doesn’t hit this note when he slides. It gives a very beautiful subtle effect.
And of course the rhythmic change he uses in Bridge 3 is great. First he plays a lot of long notes (or not any notes at all) and then he plays the licks starting in bar 175 until bar 185. Staccato (short) is the secret here and of course a great slide in bar 178 and some really nice ghost notes in bars 182-184.
I play this song on a Fender Precision (USA 1976) with flatwound strings. Standard tuning E A D G. No effects used except a bit compression and a preamp.
