BMW decided it was a good idea to put the top / rear starter bolt in from the transmission side of the bellhousing (instead of from the front like the other one, which would make removing / replacing it simple). Many have struggled with getting it out, but here's a short video showing the (cheap) tools I ended up using to get the bolt out without a fight.
