Two mega brands in the home fitness industry have created very similar home exercise bikes. The New Peloton bike has made a huge splash but NordicTrack is keeping up, creating the S22i Studio Cycle. This video compares both bikes side by side so you can see the difference in products versus their sneakily similar price tags.
Cost Comparison
The NordicTrack S22i has a purchase price of $1999 with a mandatory $249 fee for delivery and assembly. The Peloton is priced at $1995 with a $250 mandatory fee for delivery and assembly. Both bikes require a subscription service to access any type of on-board workout programs. The S22i comes with a free 12 month subscription to iFit Coach while the Peloton requires a monthly payment of $39 to access Peloton Digital.
The iFit Coach subscription will cost $15+ per month to maintain once the 12-month free trial expires. Peloton Digital allows you to create limitless profiles while iFit Coach allows one profile for $15/month and up to 5 profiles for $33/month. Over the first year, you’ll pay $2248 for the S22i and $2713 for the Peloton.
There are additional costs associated with the Peloton depending on which accessories you’ll need to get started (cycling shoes, weights, HR monitor, etc).
Similar Features
Both bikes are built well with a welded steel frame and steel crank arms. They both offer the same adjustments for fit. Both bikes have a silent flywheel with magnetic resistance. The handlebars on both bikes offer multiple points of contact for comfort and a comfortable rubber grip.
You may swap out seats and pedals with road-bike compatible components but this voids your warranty with the Peloton (not the S22i).
Each bike has two water bottle holders, speakers, a 22-inch touchscreen display, an audio plug, and a tilting display screen.
Peloton Advantages
The Peloton has a slightly smaller footprint. It’s about half a foot shorter in length taking up just a bit less floor space. You can connect headphones to the bike via Bluetooth to listen to the audio. This is something not very many bikes let you do (yet). The display can screencast to a TV for viewing workout videos in another location. Lastly, the Peloton offers LIVE classes where you can do a workout that other people are currently doing in NYC and recording. Trainers might call out to riders who’ve joined via the web from time to time, but other than that, there really isn’t any significant benefit to the live class feature.
NordicTrack S22i Advantages
The S22i is less expensive than the Peloton and comes with more accessories. It offers an incline/decline range of -10% to 20%. The bike auto-adjusts incline and resistance based on the workout video you’re watching. This allows you to focus on form, pedaling, and cadence instead of making manual adjustments.
The S22i also comes with two 3 lb hand weights (Peloton charges extra for these) that are used frequently in iFit workout videos for cross-training and upper body conditioning. The pedals offer a flat surface on one side with a toe cage on the other. They do not require a clip-in shoe/cycling cleat system, making it easier for more riders to hop on the bike and go. Peloton’s clip-in pedals require you to use a cycling shoe or replace the pedals (which voids the warranty).
The S22i has a higher user weight capacity of 350 pounds and a much longer warranty. The S22i warranty offers lifetime frame protection, 3 years for parts, and 1 year for labor. Peloton covers the frame for 5 years and covers parts and labor for 1 year.
Subscription Service | NordicTrack S22i v Peloton”
These bikes both offer similar subscription services (iFit Coach and Peloton Digital). The Peloton Digital service offers more filtering options and Live streaming classes. iFit Coach offers a more affordable price tag with equal quality workouts and instructors as PD. iFit Coach has the advantage of auto-adjusting incline and resistance, a Google Maps tool, and nutrition/sleep tracking.
