1973 Volkswagen Westphalia Camper
Amazingly original, mint, complete, low mileage survivor
The Volkswagen Westfalia Camper has become an icon in European and American culture, as a symbol of hippy and surf culture that grew in the mid-to-late 1960’s. Westfalia’s today epitomize the outdoor adventure lifestyle because of their “Swiss-army knife” life functionality.
Favored by surfers, climbers, skiers, artists and adventure travelers in general Westy’s can do it all in a reliable, versatile, small package.
Volkswagen Westfalia Campers is the designation of the specially converted VW camper vans. They are named after Westfalia-Werke, the contractor that built the vans, which is headquartered in the town of Rheda-Wiedenbrück, located in the Westphalia region of Germany. Westfalia-Werke was most famous for their “pop-top” package on these second-generation VW Buses. (1968-1979) These VW vans are called Type II Buses, and were also referred to as the "Bay Window Bus," or “Bread-Loaf Bus," or simply “VW Bus."
You can spot a 1972 and newer Bus easily by the larger, tall narrow tail lights, as opposed to the small oval-like tail lights used from about 1960 to 1971. More importantly, the '72-'79 Buses are fitted with the VW "pancake" Type 4 engine. These Buses are commonly referred to as the "Porsche-powered" Buses because they have the same engine that was used in the Porsche 914 from 1970-1976, and in the 1976 Porsche 912E. The 1972 and 1973 models were 1700cc with dual carburetors. (Truth is that the Porsches were VW powered, not the other way around.)
This two-owner, low miles example was cherished and pampered for all its life. Every shred of documentation was saved and comes with the car, from the original BOS, to factory literature, extensive service records, etc. Similarly, all the original equipment is intact and working; from the AM/FM radio to all instruments, lights, etc. The engine and transmission operate as new, and the body has never been repaired for rust or damage. The interior panels, cabinets, upholstery are all outstanding and original. The Continental tires are new all around. And all the original camping equipment is present, intact and mint.
In the tradition of camper owners, the former owner took some “hippy” license and added period stickers, curtains, etc. which can be left intact for a laugh, or removed without a trace.
So whether you want this camper as a lark, or for serious camping, or as a valuable collector piece, this is the finest example you will find at anywhere near the price.
