VIDEO TRANSCRIPT: Being a lawyer is a second career for me; I came to the law from being a social worker. I worked with street youth and homeless youth for many years before I even decided to go to law school. I decided to go to law school so I could continue to help people but in a different way.
Before I dedicated my practice to acting for injured people, I worked for many years defending insurance companies against injured people's claims, and I think that's a real advantage for my clients because it gives me tremendous insight into how insurance companies work and what I need to do to advance my clients’ interests.
A lot of people that come to us are victims of injuries that they didn't ask for; it's not their fault. They don't come to us asking for anything more than to be fairly treated and to get some justice, to get some compensation to be able to get them back on their feet. I think a lot of people come to us and all they want to do is be back to where they were before the accident or the injury happened, nothing more. What we do as lawyers is try to help them as much as we can to focus on what they need to do, which is trying to get better, and we try to take the burden of dealing with compensation and dealing with insurance companies and dealing with the court process off their shoulders.
As a litigator, I always prepare for the day when I am going to have to go to court and advocate for my client, speak on their behalf, and tell their story, and I don't believe that I can do that unless I really step into the shoes of my client and I make a point of really spending time with my clients, going to their home, spending time with them, spending time with their families, seeing how they live, seeing how their injuries have affected them. Because I think that's really the only way, and in that way, we are able to tell their stories, both to the insurance companies and to a jury or to a judge that ultimately is going to decide what happens to them.
When I'm outside the office, I like spending time with my wife and my two kids. I love going to baseball games, I love watching my kids play sports.
Success for me is when I can look back on my initial meeting with a client when they are very vulnerable and they feel devastated by the injury and the impact it has had on their lives, and often times they feel hopeless and they don't see themselves coming out the other side.
At Thomson Rogers we do a very good job at identifying what a person's needs are, making sure that the right experts, medical and others, are put in place to really fully assess the nature, extent, and severity of an injury and what the future implication of that injury is going to be on all aspects of the person's life. What we really do is try to make sure that there is adequate and fair compensation in place so that all of their needs are taken care of now and in the future.
