Taiwan celebrated the end of Lunar New Year on Monday night (22 FEB. 2016) with a spectacular Lantern Festival.
In Pingxi, hundreds gathered to release paper lanterns, an annual tradition for the last 18 years, according to New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu.
Many wrote names and wishes on them in hope that they will bring good luck in the coming year.
Historically lanterns were used in military communications, along with beacon towers, to pass information among troops over large distances.
The Lantern Festival ends the 15-day celebration of Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, and is celebrated on the night of the first full moon of the lunar New Year.
