Scratch testing concrete is done to determine a slab’s abrasion resistance. While not an essential process to decide which tool to use (floor grinders often carry a few types), the test does give some indication of how easily the floor will grind.
The video explains how to conduct a Mohs test. For the installer that wants to add this to their survey process, it explains how the kit is used. In one recent test done during a training, the contractor wanted to buy the kit. When asked why, he said that his using the kit on sales calls meant any competitor that followed him better have one too.
