Black Diamond Reactor review? Then this is the right climbing gear review video! I will ask the question, whether the Black Diamond Reactor (2019) the best ice axe for ice climbing right now? So, if you are looking for your next dedicated ice climbing axe or ice climbing tool, then you might want to take a look at the new Black Diamond Reactor!
According to Black Diamond the Reactor is optimized for pure ice climbing with its open pick angle and leashless design. Therefore this would be a valid candidate as the best ice axe for ice climbing right now. In this video we will see if it delivers what it promises and if it the best ice axe! The Black Diamond Rector features a steel head with an aluminum side plate and is compatible with the Black Diamond alpine hammer and the alpine adze. And the aluminum shaft features an innovative new ergonomic grip that is adjustable to fit all sizes of hands. The Black Diamond Reactor comes with the new Black Diamond Natural Ice Pick, which is a more narrow than the Black Diamond Ice Pick that is supposed to penetrate the ice even better. But is this enough to make it the best ice axe for ice climbing?
The offset handle of the Black Diamond Reactor feels very different from more traditional ice tools. Offset handles like these seems to be the new black in ice tool design, which is also what the new Petzl Nomic seems to be leaning towards. Both axes borrows the offset design from the Cassin X-dream, which I guess was the first ice axe that introduced not just a super ergonomic handle, but also being quite offset, but also one of the best ice axes right now. When you reach for the rubber part above the handle this is done with ease, and the movement feels really natural, but I must admit that the rubber handle is too short if you have large hands, like myself. The new Black Diamond Neutral Ice Pick just sinks really deep into this ice – this is a huge improvement for pure ice climbing. But whether it performs on more mixed ground that is something that I have to test out another time.
In this Black Diamond Reactor review (2019) video I will also take a look at the more open angled that the Black Diamond Reactor offers compared to other ice climbing axes, so I was really curious about how that would feel. And, I must admit that it takes some time getting used to the more open angled Black Diamond Reactor. But once you get the technique sorted out they are pretty damn awesome! This makes it one of the best ice axes for ice climbing.
The Black Diamond Reactor is designed for steep ice climbing in mind and is a leashless design. Something to think about!
