🦬Did you know that AFTER ruling out other conditions, red flags and/or the need for a CT, a Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test (BCTT) should be ONE OF THE FIRST TESTS ADMINISTERED?
🗓️ The research suggests that we can/should be testing for your exercise tolerance by day 4-10 after the injury. In many cases that is the FIRST or SECOND visit for patients.
The BCTT is a walking test where we gradually increase the incline to 15%, and if you're still going strong we start to increase the speed.
👍How to know you're in the clear:
➡️ Reach at/damn near your estimated HRmax without symptoms.
➡️ Reach your maximum perceived exertion level (RPE) without symptoms.
👎 How to know you need prescribed exercise:
➡️ Have symptoms flare before 80% HRmax; most commonly between 50-70%.
🙌Passing the BCTT is one of the safest ways to clear non-contact athletes and non-athletes.
🏒Contact athletes who pass the BCTT are now cleared for sport-specific workouts & eventually non-contact practice.
Pretty cool (and important) test, eh?
🤔 We're you put on a treadmill or bike early after your concussion?
If you haven't had any exercise or autonomic testing in your recovery so far, go ahead and schedule a discovery call at the link in my bio⬆️ Let's get you feeling strong again!
