VO Laos will join a regional project to preserve unique foods and agriculture
INTRO: Laos will join a regional project also involving Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam to seek certified recognition of the uniqueness of the foods and agricultural products produced in mainland Southeast Asia.
STORY: The Ministry of Science and Technology, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation known as FAO, and Agence Française de Développement joined the project launch in Vientiane on Friday.
The project, 'Promotion of Rural Development through Development of Geographical Indications at the Regional Level in Asia' is being supported by the French development agency AFD, which has provided in excess of US$2 million towards its implementation overt the next three years.
The project team, in cooperation with geographical indication (GI) stakeholders in the four beneficiary countries will work together closely to further develop GI protection and promotion.
Through the project, the Lao government, the FAO, and the AFD are combining their efforts in order to further the development of GI in the region, and reinforce the emerging GI system at the national level.
Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Dr Sakhone Chaleunvong, and FAO Representative to Laos Dr Stephen Rudgard signed the project document. Minister of Science and Technology Prof Dr Boviengkham Vongdara, representatives from AFD, the French Embassy in Vientiane and other concerned officials witnessed the signing ceremony.
