Originally brought in by the Moors, Azulejos a range of patterned ceramic tiles were highly sought after by the King of Portugal, King Manuel I on his visit to the Alhambra Palace in Southern Spain. So intrigued by the amazing look and beauty of these tiles he hired tile artists to help create similarly inspired looking tiles for his palace back in Portugal.
In Azul, players take on the role of these tile laying and creating artists as they vie for the king's validation. It is an Abstract Strategy game for 2-4 players where players draft tiles from a factory displays, place them on pattered wall lines and move them onto the wall to score victory points in a Scrabble -esque fashion. Players who pick the right tiles, combo their wall placement and generate the most prestige in the form of victory points will win.
The key to winning here is to plan ahead, draft the right tiles of the right number at the right time. Players who over pick their tiles will be penalised. It is a game of planning, risk and reward whilst having a deep sense of strategy thought and gameplay. Thumbs Up!
