Some 6,000 soldiers and police cordened and searched the Algiers casbah, home of 72,000 moslems. Thirty nine suspects were taken into custody. The anti-terrorists operation in the Casbah, on Feb 11th, followed a similar one on Feb 10th in the Bab El Oued quarter of the city. Soldier and policemen carrying tommy guns went through the casbah's narrow, twisting streets stopping everyone for identity checks, searching houses and making occasional arrests. The operation which lasted from about 9am until 3.30pm resulted in the arrests of 39 persons including 21 "already known to the police".
