Colombian Dani Martinez took his first career Tour de France stage victory as he won atop the Puy Mary.
The EF Education First rider beat Bora-Hansgrohe’s Lennard Kamna to the line as the two exhausted men reached the summit finish together at the end of the mountainous 191.5km stage from Chatel-Guyon.
Kamna’s team-mate Max Schachmann had launched a long-range attack on the penultimate climb, but was caught 1.6km from the finish as Martinez and Kamna battled it out on gradients approaching 20 per cent near the summit.
Several minutes behind them, the GC contenders began to fight on the lower slopes of the Puy Mary, with Tadej Pogacar trying to make up for his time deficit from the crosswinds in stage 7. Once again he was able to create separation to all of the other GC contenders except for Primoz Roglic and the two Slovenians began to work together on the steep climb to extend their gap to Landa, Porte, Bernal and Lopez. Egan Bernal looked to be in the most difficulty of that group, eventually losing over 30 seconds to Pogacar and Roglic, along with the second position on GC and the young rider's white jersey.
