In the 1850s, the Army brought camels to the United States to test their use in the American Southwest. Around the same time private businesses began importing camels for use in mining operations. By the 1870s, a number of these camels were let loose into the deserts, where they would be seen for decades. Some, like the Red Ghost would terrorize the early pioneers and become the stuff of legend.
Despite camels only having a lifespan of 40-50 years, people would continue to see camels in the deserts of Arizona for over 100 years.
In this video we search the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge for signs of camels and visit Quartzsite, the last camp of Hi Jolly, one of the camel handlers brought to the United States to be a part of the U.S. Camel Corp.
