It’s Tuesday the 13th of August 2024 and I’m at Belém. For some context, Carris began operating trams in 1873 and would quickly expand their network across Lisbon, reaching Belém in 1874 and extending to Algés in 1878. The network would originally be built to a track gauge of 1435mm (4 ft 8½ inch) “standard gauge." Due to other operators illegally operating services over their lines, Carris began converting their lines to 900mm (2 ft 11⁷⁄₁₆ inch) gauge to prevent these services from continuing. During the 1890s, electrification of the network would begin with electric trams replacing horse-drawn, cable-hauled and the small fleet of steam locomotives employed by Carris. In 1901, electric trams would begin operating between Cais do Sodré and Algés; this service would become Route 15E, which is currently the busiest service on the network and the only route to use articulated trams. In 1889, Linha de Cascais would reach Belém. This line would be electrified in 1926 at 1500V DC OHLE. The route currently uses Serie 3150/3250 units, which are due to be replaced in 2026 due to on-going modernisation works taking place on the line, replacing line-side infrastructure and rolling stock. The route is set to be upgraded to 25K.V. AC OHLE.
