#Voula is a #southern #suburb of Athens, 16 km south of the #city centre. It is located on the #Saronic Gulf coast, at the southwestern foot of the #Hymettus mountain. Adjacent coast #towns are #Glyfada to the northwest and #Vouliagmeni to the south. The Greek National Road 91 (Athens - #Sounio) passes through Voula. One of the largest hospitals in the Athens, #Asklipieio, lies in the northern part of Voula. It is served by the southern terminus of the Athens Tram lines 3 and 5, Asklipieio Voulas.
Once a sleepy suburban hub, the #coastal #hamlet of Voula is now one of the hottest #postcodes on the Athens #Riviera. Tucked between glitzy Glyfada and the upscale enclave of Vouliagmeni, sleepy little Voula used to be like the overlooked middle sibling. How times change. This unassuming seaside suburb now ranks among the most #cosmopolitan postcodes in the capital. When it comes to going out, many southsiders are now choosing Voula over Glyfada because of its chic but #cosy #vibe.
Voula is a pleasant #residential community, perfectly placed for the best beaches and drawcards of the Athens Riviera, while still only 16km from the city-centre. The main square—a handy but parochial #hive of butcher’s shops, bakeries, hardware and carpet stores. Voula Square, with its slightly rundown air and matronly boutiques, was the place you went to run errands, meet friends for a hurried weekday coffee, or relax over a mellow Sunday lunch at one of the old school tavernas, while the kids belted about on their scooters.
The spirit of old Voula can still be found at stalwarts like Fontanina brasserie, Dio Mio café and Andonis’ taverna. But in Voula reloaded, you’ll now also find “meat #boutiques” (complete with DJ decks and €300 imported cuts), sophisticated wine and sushi bars, concept stores, posh delis and classy dining options covering all creeds of cuisine from Russian and Vietnamese, to Italian and #contemporary #Greek There’s even an oyster bar where you can tuck into #French oysters or grilled scallops.
Voula’s #luxe #transformation is incredible, however, it has retained its neighbourhood spirit. There are still plenty of spots dishing up #quality, #atmosphere and great value for money.
A settlement that has been continually inhabited since 3000 BC, Voula, along with neighboring Vouliagmeni, was the #municipality of Aixonides Alon in #Ancient Athens. From being a sleepy summer outpost for Athenians to take in the coastal pleasures of seaside living, to a bustling round-the-year suburb that has it all, Voula is a thriving #neighbourhood that is setting.
Wedged as it is between its more famous neighbours, Glyfada and Vouliagmeni, Voula is often over-looked. But thanks to a wave of internationally-flavoured new openings and recent improvements to the town square, Voula is transforming itself from a slightly run-down residential hub of old into one of Athens’ most cosmopolitan and buzziest seaside hamlets.
All the action is centred around Voula’s high street Vasileos #Pavlou that stretches right up to the century-old Askleipiou hospital. Its wide promenade used to be dotted with a parochial mix of (grillhouses), hardware and carpet stores, matronly boutiques and butchers. While some of the old mom-and-pop stores still exist, these days you’ll encounter a dramatically altered scene with innovative concept stores. Spritely all-day modern bistros that cater to the gluten-free, health-conscious crowd have sprouted in their stead - organic wine bars, hang-outs to luxuriate with a goji berry smoothie or indulge in a chocolate pizza define the new Voula. Cool sushi bars, gourmet delicatessens, and Irish gastro pubs; chocolate artisans, chic fashion boutiques that wouldn’t be out of place in #Mykonos, and contemporary #tavernas specializing in regional cuisines and serving a range of rare micro-brewed Greek #beers and award-winning wines, are fast defining Voula as a purveyor of conscious living.
The first plans for urban planning were drawn in 1926 and Voula was designed as a "garden city" marking its development as a residential township.
