The quadriceps muscles, also known as the quads, are a group of four muscles located in the front of the thigh. These muscles work together to extend the knee and help flex the hip. The four muscles that make up the quadriceps are:
Rectus femoris: This is the largest of the four quadriceps muscles and runs down the middle of the thigh.
Vastus lateralis: This muscle is located on the outer side of the thigh and is the largest of the three vastus muscles.
Vastus medialis: This muscle is located on the inner side of the thigh and is the most medial of the three vastus muscles.
Vastus intermedius: This muscle is located beneath the rectus femoris and is the deepest of the quadriceps muscles.
The quadriceps muscles are important for activities that involve running, jumping, and squatting. Strengthening these muscles can help improve athletic performance and prevent knee injuries.
