Gerald Homes and his son Caleb look after 600 cows on 250 hectares in South Otago. His soil gets very wet, so they installed a composting barn from SmartShelters.

The shed is used for wintering in-calf heifers. It meets both council and Gerald’s wants so that he can just have good pasture coming out of the winter.

The SmartShelter is part of Gerald’s process so that he can offer good pasture all year round so that in the winter time they’re not pugging the ground, but otherwise be highly productive at this time of the year.

From an economic point of view and from a cow comfort point of view Gerald thinks it’s very difficult to beat the concept.
