Dutch piano duo Scholtes & Janssens perform Schubert’s ‘Fantasie’ in f-minor Op.103 D.940 (piano 4 hands) in a cozy venue in Austerlitz; the Beauforthuis.
Schubert’s ‘Fantasie’ is a true masterpiece. No other great composer left as many works for piano duet as Franz Schubert. Making music with others, often in a social circle, was a solid component of the Schubertian circle of friends. With the Fantasie in f, however, Schubert completely left the sphere of social gatherings and created, in the first months of his last year of life (1828), a work of almost symphonic form, whose elegiac atmosphere at the beginning sets the tone for the entire work.
After the recording in Austerlitz Scholtes & Janssens admitted that playing this Schubert demands a lot from the musicians: “From the beginning seventeen years ago, we have been forced to face up to the fact that a good duo doesn't just happen when you put two good pianists together, and certainly not in Schubert. Every note that's slightly misplaced, every chord that's not properly balanced can tarnish the performance. Every phrase you have to breathe together.”
Some months ago Scholtes & Janssens released a new cd with Schubert’s ‘Fantasie’
