Former Reserve Bank chief economist Andrew Stone has spoken with Sky News host Peta Credlin of the impacts migration can have on the federal budget and the Australian economy saying "entirely wrong" claims are being made on the issue.

Mr Stone told Sky News host Peta Credlin neither of the arguments "are very persuasive" that it's "essential" that we have a very rapid immigration program both for the Australian economy and the Australian budget.

He said there are a "range of reasons" why the "claim" that a big budget boost is experienced by increasing our immigration in in fact "entirely wrong".
