So about one week ago this beauty opened her blooms for me, and I just thought would be nice to do a spotlight video for you, maybe some of you will like it and decide to buy it :)
A few information about this orchid...
Cattlianthe Siamese Doll ‘Kiwi’ is a sympodial epiphyte orchid hybrid. It was registered in 2001 by W.Prada-Pradon, as a cross between Cattlianthe Netrasiri Doll and cattleya Netrasiri Beauty. This cattleya likes an intermediate to warm environment, and can be grown in a normal house on a bright windowsill, on a greenhouse, or even outdoors if the night time temperatures do not drop lower that 10 C.
The blooms of this orchid are very showy and quite big, measuring about 8 cm in diameter, and imagine the show she will give to you, since she is able to produce clusters of up to 9 blooms. This orchid has a well defined waxy star shape of the flower. The petals and sepals have a beautiful green base color doubled by a huge number of magenta spots. The vivid fuchsia lip, is quite short and narrow and rapidly stops into the white creamy throat of the bloom, completing the beauty of the flower.
The blooms are very fragrant and have a complex scent, that kind of comes in layers, first coming a creamy scent, after a floral towards spicy and then it completely knocks you down with it’s strong spicy scent. The fragrance is more noticeable in the morning hours and fades in the evening and night. In the sunny days, this orchid fills easly my room with it’s strong fragrance, and can be a bit overwhelming if you stick your nose into it. If you want to enjoy it’s fragrance, don’t stand anywere closer than 3 feet on it, otherwise you are going to have a little headache. The orchid can produce 1 to 9 flowers per inflorescence that sprout from a sheath at the top of a maturing cane. The bloom season of this cattleya is spring and fall. This orchid requires a good strong light to bloom (about 2000-3000 fc), but not direct sun, as it will burn it’s fleshy leaves.
This is a medium sized bifoliate cattleya, with thin and quite long pseudobulbs, that are about 20 to 25 cm in height and about 1-2 cm in width. When good light is provided, the leaves gain some nice purple spottings on them. The leaves are not too long, measuring about 12 cm in length and about 5-6 cm in width.
The roots are thin and healthy roots are white. When in active growth they have bright green tips. New growths usually appear at the base of the cane and can take about 6-7 months to mature. This orchid usually produces a sheath from which the spike emerges. The sheath is green when the buds start to emrge.
Propagation of this orchid can be done through division, each division should have at least 3 fully grown pseudobulbs for a fast growth further on.
With all this features, this orchid really inspires me a kiwi fruit , making it an amainzing and desirable cattleya for each orchid collector.
