Florence aka Firenze, the cradle of the Renaissance. The big names like Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Dante Alighieri all hail from the Republic of Florence. The House of Medici, one of the most influential families in Europe during the Renaissance, is based in Florence. No wonder the buildings here are so grand, especially the Duomo (Cathedral). There are many palaces in the city, such as Palazzo Vecchio and Palazzo Pitti. Galleria degli Uffizi is also renowned all over the world. Fun fact: the Medicis did not want to mingle with the plebs, so they had a secret passageway from the Palazzo Vecchio through the Uffizzi and Ponte Vecchio in order to reach Palazzo Pitti. Some travel tips: don't come during the summer, the city is so packed with tourists at that time.
