The ten leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), including President Benigno S. Aquino III, participated in the 18th ASEAN-China Summit as day one of the 27th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits continued at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
Premiere Le Kequiang of the People’s Republic of China was welcomed by the ASEAN Chair, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, in the latter’s opening remarks where it was noted that relations was cemented back in 1991 and that China had grown to become one of the region’s most important and active dialogue partners.
“In fact, next year will mark 25 years of friendship between ASEAN and China. As others, Malaysia supports the principle of the various activities proposed to commemorate this landmark anniversary. We are confident the occasion would help promote more robust trade and investment relations between our two regions while promoting greater mutual understanding and friendship through social and cultural interactions,” the Prime Minister said.
The ASEAN Chair also welcomed the adoption of the Plan of Action to Implement the Joint Declaration on ASEAN-China Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity that covers a broad range of areas of cooperation in the next five years.
