Police in Kitui have impounded consignments of suspected contraband sugar in three different towns and arrested one person.

The bags containing the illicit sugar were impounded in Kitui, Matuu and Mwingi towns in simultaneous raids on godowns belonging to Mt Kenya wholesalers who were preparing to release it into the local market. Authorities say samples were taken to the government chemist for testing even as detectives investigate a possible case of tax evasion. This comes days after another consignment of contraband sugar was impounded in Eastleigh Nairobi. Interior cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiangi said samples tested revealed the sugar contained mercury and copper as he warned that the government would intensify the war on contraband products.
