Peter Oyston, founding Dean of Drama at the Victorian College of the Arts and regular teacher/director at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, has been utilising Stanislavski's famous acting methods in the professional rehearsal room and classroom for thirty years. In this video presentation, Peter reveals how he combines Stanislavski's techniques in a systematic approach to provide a full rehearsal process or a drama course in microcosm. He has interpreted these processes to fit contemporary rehearsal schedules and provide actors and directors with a fast and accessible method of preparing for a performance. Using Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard" as the text with a group of Australian University students, Peter demonstrates how these methods can be applied to any text, modern or classical. Thirteen of Stanislavski's methods are covered on the video, including:
o Analysing the Text
o Naming the Units of Action
o The Magic "If"
o Subtext Inner Life
o Physical Actions
o Circles of Concentration
o The Fourth Wall
o Objectives and Superobjectives
o Emotional Memory
o Thoughts Who You Are in Communion with
o Personal Objects and Costume
o The Unbroken Line of Life
o Rhythm - Tempo
Extra Features: The video also comes with a 40-page booklet, including additional notes by Peter Oyston and a full transcript of the video. Colour, 68 minutes, 2004
CHARLES BUD TINGWELL, actor and honorary Vice-President of the PDGV: Peter Oyston's detailed account of how to use the Stanislavski System is a very valuable work for all who are interested in high standards in theatre, film, television and radio. Many years ago I was introduced the teachings of Stanislavski. I found that those principles were of enormous value in any medium in which I worked. I believe that Peter Oyston's video and the accompanying booklet should be studied by as many people involved in drama as possible.
BOB HOSKINS, actor, recalls his experience of working with Peter Oyston: With a very heavy season of some of the greatest drama ever written, Peter moulded me into what is whimsically called a principal actor. He gave me a very practical and intelligent approach to my craft. In fact, I would say my work with Peter was my birth as a serious actor.
PETER FITZPATRICK, Professor of Drama at Monash University has also endorsed this video: This video provides an invaluable resource for actors, directors, teachers, drama students and researchers or for anyone interested in the making of authentic theatre.
JUSTIN CASH (Drama Victoria) has reviewed the video as follows: A fantastic resource for teachers and students of VCE Drama and Theatre Studies and play directors and casts, has just been released. Full Moon Films in conjunction with acclaimed theatre director and acting teacher Peter Oyston and third year drama students at Monash University have produced a video exploring thirteen of Stanislavski's techniques.
Let there be no doubt, Peter Oyston knows his theatre! For those of us fortunate enough to be in his workshop at the Drama Victoria Conference last November, it was clear Oyston intimately understands the processes Stanislavski employed with his actors, and how to successfully transfer these into the modern theatre, making them relevant for contemporary actors and drama students.

From PETER OYSTON: My work with Bob Hoskins was fundamentally based on my understanding of Constantin Stanislavski. This tape (HOW TO USE THE STANISLAVSKI SYSTEM) represents the culmination of thirty years working as a teacher, actor and director in the UK, FRANCE, USA, AUSTRALIA and JAPAN; so the methods depicted are tried and tested in universities, schools, professional theatres, television studios and on film sets. They are user friendly for actors, directors and students and I highly recommend them to you as I did to Bob Hoskins some years ago.
