The scholars of Islam consider the supplication (dua) made between the two prostrations (sujood) during the prayer (salah) as significant based on several sources, including the Quran and the Hadith. Here’s an explanation of why they deem it important and the ruling on those who intentionally omit it:
Importance and Obligation of the Dua Between Two Sujoods
1. Evidence from Hadith:
- There are several Hadith where Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is reported to have regularly made supplications between the two prostrations. For example, he would say: "رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي، رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي" (Rabbi ighfir li, Rabbi ighfir li - My Lord, forgive me, My Lord, forgive me).
- Other narrations include supplications like: "اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي، وَارْحَمْنِي، وَاهْدِنِي، وَعَافِنِي، وَارْزُقْنِي" (Allahumma ighfir li, warhamni, wahdini, wa’afini, warzuqni - O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, heal me, and provide for me).
2. Practice of the Prophet (PBUH):
- The consistent practice of the Prophet (PBUH) in making these supplications indicates its importance. The Prophet's actions are considered a form of tacit approval, making the practice a Wajib (obligatory) or Sunnah Mu’akkadah (emphasized Sunnah).
3. Scholarly Consensus:
- While there is a consensus on the significance of the dua between the sujoods, scholars differ on whether it is obligatory (wajib) or recommended (mustahabb). The Hanafi and Hanbali schools of thought generally view it as wajib, meaning it should not be omitted. Other schools may consider it highly recommended but not obligatory.
Sheikh Abdulaziz ibn Baz, Sheikh Salih Al Fawzan, and other Hanbali scholars consider the prayer of the one who leaves it intentionally as invalid.
