Elon Musk has said getting a foothold in the lithium refining business would be a “license to print money.”
Construction is underway on Tesla's proposed $375 million lithium refinery here in western Nueces County
We learned about this during Tesla's recent Investor Day presentation.
Tesla recently broke ground and Tesla Senior Vice President Drew Baglino says they’ll start commissioning within 10 months with actual production in 12 months.
But the actual site doesn't look developed at all. And, to my surprise, even on Easter, a security guard was on duty and kicked us off the public road.
The estimated start date was December 2022 and projected end date is Dec. 1, 2023
The site is located west of Corpus Christi and near the intersection of U.S. Highway 77 and County Road 28 — just a few miles away from the city of Driscoll.
The facility will package and ship battery-grade lithium hydroxide, a key component for the batteries in Tesla's EV fleet and products.
Tesla estimated that its lithium refinery would employ about 165 people.
