Bright rays of sunlight pierced through the crisp waters of the Crystalline, casting shattered specs of brilliant light. Verdant decorations hung high as the unwavering flourish of a trumpet sounded. Undoubtedly, it was an excellent day….

But chaos isn’t when the hearts of the people are torn into a million pieces. Rather, it’s when the people are united under a single extreme thought.

These seven brand-new preludes are Richard Min’s way of telling the story of what happens after the sun has set and darkness has taken over, when chaos sets in and the light is vanquished to the north.

00:00 — Premiere

00:16 — “Solaris Misterioso” tells the story of a grand polonaise-esque ball of glamor and allure. In a magnificent melody harmonized by an even more striking bass, “Solaris Misterioso” is surely one of Min’s most dramatic openings yet.

05:39 — “Memories” reminisces on the time of the ball in its immediate aftermath. As the crowds flow out and only one person remains, colorful chords and grave dissonances add a splash of emotion to a nostalgic piece.

07:30 — “Soul” captures the moment of shock and anguish after realizing a soul’s world has descended into chaos. With progressively painful chords exploding into a lullaby-esque melody, the oil canvas painting represents the dream-like status as the soul thinks: “this can’t be real.”

09:53 — “Fantasy” is the phase of visions, when all was lost and none was gained. The soul now lives in a secluded fantasy, highlighted by the waltz-like nature of this chilling piece.

13:47 — “Void” is the point of no return. In a hidden home, deep in the woods by the mountainside, the poor soul has fallen out of the fantasy and into a void of jarring cacophony.

16:00 — “Land of the Ancients” is the soul’s journey to redemption in communicating with the ancients. In a purple garden where none have stepped in millennia, “Land of the Ancients” says a lot about the integrity of the soul with its dark yet moving, emotional yet numb atmosphere.

22:56 — “Northern Chorus” is a remastered version of “Northern Song.” Min’s embarking from the piano leads to a testing of the waters of vocals, and the both relaxing and unsettling nature of this piece is a testament to Min’s trans-genre, trans-instrumental musical prowess as he explores the end of the soul after being banished to the great north.

From sunrise to sunset to beyond, these preludes represent both Min’s gifts—and warnings—to the world.
