Levin Landfill - a miserable source of pollution for Hokio & lower North Island, NZ.
The older landfill on the site is leaching landfill liquids straight into Hokio Stream past where the kids play and the people fish, out into the ocean to be shared with the world. When this landfill site was in use it was normal to throw away your leftover garden poisons, medications, paints etc. Imagine the interesting brew of toxins we're dealing with!
The newer landfill cells are lined with plastic, but those liners are only expected to last around 50 years (and even then, only if they're not pierced or otherwise damaged, current testing shows it's likely already leaking), so that will be long term pollution for Hokio & the ocean too.
Levin Landfill doesn't separate green waste; rotting green waste is a large source of methane and other greenhouse gases.
Gas from the landfill is not allowed to leave the premises but it reaches over a kilometre away through the Hokio neighbourhood where it gets indoors and could make people sick. Methane doesn't even need an open door or window - it comes through the walls.
Levin Landfill doesn't adhere to its resource consents, constantly breaking the rules at every review.
What kind of council allows a dump built on sand surrounded by fresh water aquifers, where the leaching pollutants can so easily drain? It may have been acceptable in the 1950s when we didn't know better - but we certainly know better now.
This is only a snippet of the full story - there is so much more going wrong.
Horowhenua District Council need to close the landfill NOW.
Horizons Regional Council need to stop letting HDC get away with it NOW.
Ratepayers for the Horowhenua & Kapiti regions need to get involved and stop them NOW.
