Legumes are a plant in the Fabaceae family and are grown primarily as food products. A pulse is the edible seed from a legume plant, for instance the pea inside a pea pod is the pulse, and the pulses are typically what we eat.
Some common known legumes include beans, peas, chickpeas, lentils, soybeans and peanuts, just to name a few.
Legumes have many health benefits, as many legumes are a plant source that are high in protein, which can help in building and maintaining muscle mass and make you feel more full or satiated, which can help with weight control.
They are also high in fiber, which aides in digestion, and can help with blood sugar control. Typically most legumes are rich in vitamins and minerals, which benefit many different bodily functions such as vision, physical movement, brain function and heart health.
Many legumes are also high in antioxidants, which help fight against harmful free-radicals, provide cellular protection and are linked to a lower risk of many types of diseases.
Legumes can be consumed in many different ways, such as having some peanuts as a convenient snack, they can be added to a salad to provide some flavor and protein, they can be added to a dip, used in soups, or as a meat substitute.
The bottom line is that lentils are a great, and healthy food with links to overall improved bodily function, heart and gut health, and antioxidant benefits.
