The Yamaha FZ arrived in India originally as the FZ16 featuring a 153cc engine. It was highly regarded as a fat-tyred commuter with style and a dash of performance. In generation two, while everyone raised their displacements to create the 160cc class as we know it today, Yamaha did the strangest thing by downsizing the engine to 149cc and focussing on fuel economy rather than performance, which not only was the FZ's USP, but also Yamaha's USP no matter how hard they've tried to hide from it. This also brought the confusing naming scheme where the FZ-S is the old FZ16 bit downsized, the -X, this one, is the retro-model that apes the XSRs 700 and 155 in design. The FZ25, for example, is a far clearer name. What Yamaha have managed through all of this is to maintain a solid level of quality, something the Japanese company is known for. Today, the FZ is an unassuming, simple commuter that appears well-made, offers as much economy as anything in its class more or less, and is easy to punt around town. What it's lost along the way is the sense of excitement though.
