I just spent a week exploring Puerto Morelos, the antidote to Cancun, and a paradise for swimming, snorkelling, and jungle exploration🤿

My friend of 15 years recently made Puerto Morelos her home so I had to come visit! I discovered that it’s the perfect spot for those of us escaping the hard core party scene of Cancun (and even Playa del Carmen 🫣) but can't resist the beauty of the Riviera Maya.

🇲🇽 Nestled roughly halfway between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos is a small beach town and former fishing village. It’s only 20 minutes away from Cancún International Airport. 

🇲🇽 Once you’re in town it’s easy to navigate on foot, in a taxi, by bike, or colectivo. 

🇲🇽 Its location on the Caribbean Sea is blessed with many stunning, low-key beaches. The quieter white sand beaches are perfect for actually relaxing, sipping champagne, and building sand castles 🏖️ Check out Playa de Puerto Morelos and Ojo de Agua beaches.

🇲🇽 There are a variety of beach clubs to choose from or you can simply drop a towel since all beaches in Mexico are public.  

🇲🇽 Located one hundred meters off shore is the Puerto Morelos section of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the world’s second-largest coral reef system. Its unusually close proximity to shore and protected status make it some of the most accessible and highest quality reef snorkelling in the region.

🇲🇽 La Ruta de los Cenotes is a stretch of about 21 miles dotted with dozens of cenotes. In addition to swimming in these breathtaking sinkholes, you can zip line, dive, kayak, and ride mountain bikes and ATVs along the winding trails of the Mayan jungle.

🇲🇽 I love the artistic vibe of the town. You can find handmade items at the Puerto Morelos Artisans Market, and on the weekends artisans sell their goods at the town square. 

🇲🇽 There’s a wide selection of local and international cuisine. Taco spots are everywhere and my fav was Oswaldo. La Sirena is a special spot serving an international menu inspired by Mediterranean cuisine using local ingredients. It has the best rooftop in the town.
