In this episode of DJs BrewTube I side-by-side review yet another sought after barrel aged Imperial Stout. This time I explore Founders KBS 2017 in contrast with 2018. Founders KBS is aged in bourbon barrels for over a year and clocks in at 11.8% & 12.3% ABV respectively. Founders described KBS as follows:

"What we’ve got here is an imperial stout brewed with a massive amount of coffee and chocolates, then cave-aged in oak bourbon barrels for an entire year to make sure wonderful bourbon undertones come through in the finish. Makes your taste buds squeal with delight."

This sounds quite nice. Like something I would love to pour down my neck. Lets see how Founders KBS 2017 compares to 2018. My written review and report card for Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout 2017 vs. 2018 side-by-side follows:

Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout 2017 vs. 2018 WRITTEN REVIEW:

A - Both Founders KBS 2017 & 2018 pour black as tar. There's only about a finger of khaki colored tightly packed head that coats to the glass when agitated along with omnipresent alcohol legs.

S - 2017 = Dark fruits, bourbon, oak and vanilla layered over a smooth chocolate and muted coffee. This is followed by roasted malts, big cocoa and dark chocolate. Fudgey sweetness. Some slightly burnt notes. Bitter chocolate. Nice layer of oak brings it all together. Deeply malty with a great edge taken off by the barrel.
2018 = Freshly brewed dark roasted coffee notes dominate and are accompanied by inviting high percentage cacao content semi-sweet dark chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, tobacco, dark fruits with a touch of caramel in the faint background. No alcohol is detectable in the aroma of either vintage.

T - Follows the noes to a ( T ). 2017 = Dark fruits, bourbon, oak and vanilla layered over a smooth chocolate and muted coffee. This is followed by roasted malts, big cocoa and dark chocolate. Fudgey sweetness. Some slightly burnt notes. Bitter chocolate. Nice layer of oak brings it all together. Deeply malty with a great edge taken off by the barrel.

M - Incredibly smooth and full bodied. Surprisingly easy to drink for such a burly brew. Spot on carbonation. This beer coats your mouth like it coats the glass when swirled.

O - Founders KBS 2017 & 2018 definitely lives up to the hype and it is a beer that matures gracefully. I could down either vintage all day. Top notch brew. I recommend and will seek it out again.
