The athletes can rest easy, their beds have arrived at the Olympic Village in Paris.
16,000 specially made mattresses have been delivered from Japan, courtesy of Olympics partner Airweave.
And whether you are a 140kg boxer or a 40kg distance walker Airweave’s 3-block system will fit the contours of your body.
Airweave’s CEO, Motokuni Takaoka, who conceived the system specifically for Olympians, explains,
“Inside the mattress are three blocks of airfibres. Each airfibre has a different firmness in each side. For instance, one surface is soft, the other surface is moderate, the other is moderate and firm, or moderate and extra-firm. By changing these blocks we can fit each individual athlete.”
Athletes will send photos of their bodyshape to an app, and it will calibrate which block is required for their shoulders, hips and feet.
16,000 beds have been produced by the factory back in Kota Japan – 12,000 for the athletes and 4,000 for the media.
The blocks are filled with non-toxic polyethylene so they will not be invaded by bedbugs, they are also easy to move and re-use.
“We were requested by Paris 2024 to make a sustainable bed for the Olympics. So we designed this mattress – it’s easy to assemble, and will be used in a second drive for organisations such as the French Army, Emmaus, Opera Ballet School (Paris) and École Hôtelière Tsuji ” confirmed Takaoka.
The base of the bed is made of cardboard and designed to take the weight of a 200kg human.
Takaoka inherited a fishing-line factory from his uncle, but quickly realized that the material could also be used to fill cushions, and from there he started to design mattresses.
A decade ago he started asking athletes to try his creations, and soon he was the mattress provider for the US, Japanese, German and French Olympic teams.
At Tokyo 2020(1) Airweave became an official Olympic partner.
