Colombian Disaster Response Brigade from the National Army receives a certification to handle “heavy level” emergencies after a two-day drill in which over a hundred soldiers and civilians were assessed by local authorities and international observers.
The simulated scenario relives some of the situations that occurred during the 1999 earthquake in Armenia, where structures collapsed, and where the first 48 hours were key to the search and rescue of possible victims trapped in rubble.
By obtaining this certification, Colombia will have a team of internationally qualified and certified military personnel to provide humanitarian assistance in times of emergency.
