STORYLINE:
Thousands of protesters marched through Athens on Wednesday as a 24-hour general strike brought most public services in Greece to a halt in protest at the government's introduction of further harsh austerity measures intended to keep the debt-ridden country solvent.
About 10-thousand protesters marched past the heavily guarded Greek parliament building as public and private sector unions rallied against the government's planned cost-cutting measures.
As the protest went on stone-throwing youths were reportedly attacking riot police, who responded with tear gas and stun grenades, at the heart of the march through the greek capital.
No injuries or arrests were immediately reported following Wednesday's clashes.
This month, the Socialist government is planning to pass further cutbacks aimed at saving an estimated 23 (b) billion euro (33 (b) billion US dollars) through till 2015.
Greece is currently receiving 110 (b) billion (158 (b) billion US Dollars) in rescue loans in a 2010-2013 programme from the European Union and International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The general strike suspended all train and ferry services, grounded flights between noon and 4 pm local time and disrupted Athens public transport.
Radio and television news broadcasts were suspended as journalists walked off the job for the day.
Another 8-thousand people joined in two separate protests in Greece's second largest city, Thessaloniki, in the North of the country.
