Multiple Sclerosis and Vitamin D
We want all people with multiple sclerosis to be “four for four“. This includes taking an MS disease modifying therapy that works, avoiding tobacco use, exercising regularly, and supplementing low levels of vitamin D.
Total vitamin D levels below 50 correlated with worse MS disease outcomes, both clinically and on MRI. Fortunately vitamin D levels above 50 are correlated with improved clinical and radiographic outcomes. Obviously we want your vitamin D level above 50.
So how do we do this? We check her blood test and prescribe supplementation as needed. Often times our patients benefit from 4000 to 5000 international units of vitamin D3 a day. However sometimes much higher dose is needed. Obviously this is something that you want to do with your MS provider.
