(22 Apr 2014) Self-proclaimed Mayor of Slovyansk Vyacheslav Ponomarev denied any knowledge of a local politician found dead in the city on Tuesday, saying he would look into the matter.
Ukraine's acting President ordered security forces to resume "anti-terror" operations in the country's east on Tuesday after the bodies of two people allegedly abducted by pro-Russia insurgents were found.
In a statement, acting President Oleksandr Turchynov said the two bodies found on Tuesday in Slovyansk bore signs of torture.
One of them was a member of the city council and a member of Turchynov's party, he said.
In Slovyansk's Lenin square a memorial has been set up for three pro-Russian men who were allegedly killed in a recent shootout at a checkpoint manned by separatist militia, just outside of Slovyansk.
Sergey Rudenko, 53, Alexander Siganov, 24 and Pavel Pavelko, 42 were shot and killed on Easter Sunday in an incident that pro-Russian separatists said was a grave breach of a fragile self-declared Easter truce.
Speaking on the memorial, Ponomarev said "Today we said our farewell to our comrades killed in battle against the fascists. May they rest in peace and eternal glory to them."
