In this video I turn a wood mallet out of Ash and curly maple burl. I break down the wood and then stabilize the pieces to be used for the head in resin. I then bore out a hole in each half to accept a 1 inch oak dowel that will align and strengthen the joint between the two halves. I used Total Boat 2:1 High performance resin to glue the two halves together. I then used Woodpecker Ultrashear Tools to turn to the desired shape. I keep in mind the size of the handle and the width of my own hand. This makes for a very comfy and custom fit handle. Stabilizing the head makes it much stronger and heavier. This mallet should last a long time and be more effective when hitting a chisel or carving gouge. Be sure to check the links below if you'd like to support me and my sponsors.
