World famous Southern Railway No. 4501 on the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum line in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Southern 4501 is a 2-8-2 built in 1911 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia, PA as the Southern Railway's first Mikado. Seen as surplus, it was sold to the Kentucky & Tennessee Railway, where it served as their #12 from 1948 until 1963. Following retirement, it was quickly purchased by Paul H. Merriman for use on the newly formed Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. The 4501 became the engine which started the Southern's famed Steam Program in 1966, which would go on to utilize numerous steam locomotives in excursion service throughout the entire Norfolk Southern system through 1994. The 4501 sat serviceable between 1998 and 2013. With NS starting a new steam program in 2011, the 4501 finally had reason to return to steam. Following a thorough rebuild in 2014, the 4501 once again operates excursions as part of 21st Century Steam.
