John Greenleaf Whittier (1807 -- 1892) was an American Quaker poet whose work primarily focused on abolitionism, religion, and nature. Among his most well-known works are the patriotic poem Barbara Frietchie, the Civil War-inspired "Song of the Negro Boatmen", and the 1866 narrative poem Snow-Bound.
In 2009, Dr. Bruce Graver donated to the Phillips Memorial Library a sizable collection of Whittier manuscripts, first edition publications, and related documents.
In this two-part video interview, Dr. Graver discusses Whittier's history, publishing practices of the time, and relates how he personally came to start the collection. Part 1 of 2.
