The Asian Para Games, better known as the Para Asiad, is a multi-sport event sanctioned by the Asian Paralympic Committee that's suited for athletes with physical disabilities, and held a few weeks after every Asian Games, it was considered to be a successor to the old Far East and South Pacific (FESPIC) Games that ran from 1975 to 2006.
Although there is the strategy of holding the Asian Games and the Asian Para Games in the same city just as used by the Olympic and the Paralympic Games, but however, the exclusion of the Asian Para Games from the host city contract for the Asiad itself meant that both events ran independently of each other.
The Para Asiad visited Indonesia for the event's third edition held from 6 to 13 October 2018, but unlike that year's Asian Games in which Jakarta and Palembang co-hosted, Jakarta, this time, staged the event solely, although one of the events were taken place at West Java's Bogor Regency, which is situated south of the Indonesian capital.
The Jakarta Para Asiad attracted 2,762 athletes from 43 nations across Asia, including debutants Bhutan and Yemen, as well as a unified Korean delegation, although North and South Korean athletes also competed under their respective national flags in some individual events. The event featured 506 events in 18 sports, including para chess, which was introduced to the Asian Para Games for the first time as a medal sport.
China dominated the Para Games for the third time in a row, having won a total of 319 medals, which include 172 golds, and they finished ahead of South Korea - at second place with 54 golds, and Iran - at third with 51. Japan had achieved a total of 198 medals, which places them at second in the overall count, but they've racked out only 45 golds, thus finishing the Games at fourth place.
