(5 Nov 2015) At an International Trade Fair in Cuba's capital Havana on Wednesday, European pavilions dominated the landscape, with American business relegated to a remote pavilion in a corner next to a parking lot.
But in spite of the remote location, European businesses were a weary of the presence of 33 US companies at this year's fair.
The entry of the US is considered by the Europeans as an encroachment on a market they have dominated for decades, in large measure because of a US trade embargo against Cuba.
The European Union is Cuba's biggest investor and second biggest trading partner, just behind Venezuela, which has a special economic and political relationship with the island.
But US companies are gearing up for a fight over the Cuban market, believing proximity and history give them advantages other countries cannot match.
And American business delegations streaming into Cuba since a thawing of relations with the United States was announced last December.
The fair runs from 1 to 7 November.
