Demonstration of Shorinji Kempo by the British Shorinji Kempo Federation (BSKF) at FestivalAsia 2015.
Shorinji kempo is a Japanese self defence martial art which traces a direct lineage to the Shaolin monastery in China. It aims to develop both the body and the mind, not only through the study of dynamic and effective self-defence techniques, but also through Zen meditation and philosophical studies.
Based on the use of physical principles and weak points rather than brute strength, Shorinji kempo is an ideal form of practical self-defence, particularly against larger or stronger opponents. Our techniques focus on the balance between 'hard' strikes (punches, kicks and blocks), and ‘soft’ grappling (eludes, pins, joint locks and throws).
Teachings also include a therapeutic acupressure massage system (seiho), and seated meditation (zazen) is an integral part of training at every class.
