Bleeding and spotting from the vagina during pregnancy are common. Up to 1 out of 4 of all pregnant women have some bleeding or spotting during their pregnancy. Bleeding and spotting in pregnancy don't always mean there's a problem, but they can be a sign of miscarriage or other serious complications.
Causes of bleeding in later pregnancy:
Cervical changes. These can lead to bleeding, particularly after sex.
Vaginal infections. Your midwife or doctor can discuss tests and treatment with you.
Placental abruption.
Low-lying placenta
Vasa praevia.
Contact your health care provider the same day if you have light vaginal bleeding that goes away within a few hours. Contact your health care provider immediately if you have any amount of vaginal bleeding that lasts longer than a few hours or is accompanied by abdominal pain, cramping, fever, chills or contractions.
Pregnancy Bleeding Does Not Always Mean Miscarriage.
Beyond abdominal cramping and passing tissues (the placenta and the gestational sac) through the vagina, one of the most common symptoms of miscarriage is vaginal bleeding. That said, bleeding in early pregnancy does not always mean miscarriage.
If the bleeding is a sign that your pregnancy can't safely continue, your doctor may prescribe medications such as: Methotrexate is a drug that helps your body absorb harmful tissue like in an ectopic pregnancy. Misoprostol is used to end a dangerous pregnancy in the first 7 weeks.
