STORYLINE:
Security was tight in Jerusalem as Christians celebrated Good Friday and Muslims gathered for Friday prayers.
Greek Orthodox worshippers started the Good Friday processions by walking from the Greek Patriarchate to the Holy Sepulchre, symbolically retracing the path Jesus walked to his crucifixion.
Later on Friday, the Latin Orthodox Church is due to hold its procession.
In Ramallah late on Thursday, Palestinian security agents foiled what they said was an Israeli attempt to kill a local activist with a car bomb.
Nasser Abu Humaid, leader of the Tanzim militia in the Amari refugee camp, said two men befriended him and offered him a car.
Humaid said he became suspicious and called security agents, who discovered a bomb in the car.
The car was towed to a safe location and the device was detonated, as an Israeli helicopter hovered overhead.
Humaid said the two men were collaborators working for Israel, and the car bomb was an attempt to kill him.
The Israeli military said it did not know about the car bomb incident.
