Rear End someone or got rear ended? These techniques are the same, but you must disable the airbags(pull fuse/s) if driving/yanking rear end damage out. Pulling from the front like I did(driving in reverse) should never trigger an airbag. You got T-Boned? use the same techniques for a side damage accident. Of course if airbags are deployed that can weigh heavily on your decision to keep it. My general rule is, if it can still drive, trans shift, etc then repair it. If an entire wheel assembly has been ripped off, you will need to weigh this.
CAR STORY for those who care to know.
My wife bought this car when it was a year/two old and it has been a work horse and paid for itself a hundred times over. I have hauled trailers(yep I made a full size hitch on the back) with thousands of pounds of riding mowers, tillers, snowmobiles, you name it thousands of combined miles all while pushing 35-40mpg plus. I can't count the numbers of times this has been loaded internally(hatch back) with 2-3 generators, tillers, snowblowers etc. Sure I have trucks but dang the mileage(and Air Conditioning) makes this a joy to drive. This has made/saved me so much money. I think my wife bowed out driving it full time around 100k miles and I put the rest of the 337,000miles on the orig eng/trans. Everything works flawlessly, dare I say like any brand new car as I have been the only mechanic for over 25years on it. Obviously I have grown very fond of this little guy and can't let it go to scrap. It was stolen 11 years ago and gone for months. It was joy rode hard and had frame damage all underneath pushing the drivers wheel back a decent amount. I have a video of me fixing that. Since then no issues and it has been a daily driver and I'm eager to push it to well over half a million miles.
INSURANCE COMPANIES:
Most people don't know they can buy back their car for salvage value and still get paid(even if your fault w/full coverage). Say they determine your car is worth $4000 but you want to keep it. They will sell it back to you for around whatever junkyard value is. Usually around 10%, so $400. So you get a check for $3600 and keep the car. They will send you a salvage title/paperwork. You will need to get a rebuilt title. This is super easy. Most states all you have to do to get a rebuilt title is fix it enough to pass safety inspection(not smog/emissions). So good tires, no windshield damage and no deployed air bags etc. It's the exact same test you likely do every year for your car anyway. My state I have to pay around $15 for the safety test and then $10 for a new title. So $25 to get a rebuilt title. All insurance companies insure rebuilt cars with basic no fault/liability for the exact same cost as a non rebuilt/salvaged car.
