On 13 March 2014, officers of the Hawaii Republican Party parted company with its chairman David Chang; replacing him with Pat Saiki, a liberal Republican from the 1980's. At Saiki's press conference that day, she pledged to keep the party from ever taking a position on any issue and stated that the ideal candidate would be a chameleon who could take whatever positions on issues were needed to get him or her elected.
